Short Biographies


Keynote Speakers

Cedar Lewisohn (UK)
Cedar Lewisohn is an artist and curator. He has recently been working on The Canals Project, a series of public art works for the waterways of East London. In 2013 he organised The Hecklers, a large scale group exhibition for The New Art Gallery Walsall. Between 2005 and 2011 he worked for Tate, where he curated in 2008 the landmark exhibition, Street Art. He has published two books, Street Art, The Graffiti Revolution (Tate, 2008), Abstract Graffiti (Murrell, 2011) and is currently working as a researcher at the Jan Van Eyck Academie, Maastricht.

Nuart Intervention (Martyn Reed) (Norway)
Est in 2001 as the visual new media arm of the digital music festival Numusic, Nuart quickly came to realise that the power of technology in relation to visual art was not in the production of art, but in its ability to  distribute it. In 2005 the festival became one of the first festivals to be exclusively dedicated to the production and promotion of Street Art in all its forms. The festival consists of a series of both sanctioned and unsanctioned street works and interventions alongside a six week indoor exhibition, an academic program of panel debates, film screenings, artists presentations and workshops is presented during the opening weekend under the name Nuart Plus.

Marcus Willcocks (UK)
Marcus is a Research Fellow and Designer with the Design Against Crime Research Centre. He holds a degree in BA (Hons) Product Design (2000) from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London and later completed a Master’s degree in Design and Public Space (2005) from Elisava Escola Superior de Disseny, Barcelona. Within DACRC most recently developed ‘Graffiti Dialogues’ project, the creative and criminal conflicts linked to the practices of graffiti and street art.

Prof. Dr.ª Raquel Henriques da Silva, PhD in Art History; Associate Professor of the Art History Department at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, University NOVA of Lisbon; coordinator of the Masters in Museology in the same Faculty; Director of the Art History Institute; integrated member and coordinator of the research line of Museum Studies of the Art History Institute; former Director of the Portuguese Institute of Museums and National Museum of Contemporary Art.

Prof. Dr.ª Margarida Brito Alves, PhD in Contemporary Art History; Invited Associate Professor of the Art History Department at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, University NOVA of Lisbon; coordinator of the research line of Contemporary Art Studies in the Art History Institute and integrated member of this research unit.

Prof. Dr. Fernando António Baptista Pereira, PhD in Sciences of Art; Associate Professor and President of the Scientific Council at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon; creator of the study plans for the BA  in  Art  and  Heritage  Sciences  and  the  MA  in  Museum Studies; Director of the Research Center for Fine Arts; integrated member and coordinator of the research section Sciences of Art and Heritage – Francisco de Holanda, at the Research Centre for Fine Arts.

Prof. Dr.ª Maria João Gamito, PhD in Audiovisuals, Theory of the Image and Multimedia; Full Professor with Aggregation at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon; Invited Associate Professor of the Department of Architecture at ISCTE; coordinator of the BA course in Multimedia at the Faculty of fine Arts and also coordinator of the Scientific Department of Drawing for the Architecture BA at ISCTE; integrated member and principal researcher of the investigation section of Art and Multimedia at the Research Centre for Fine Arts

Prof. Dr.ª Teresa Valsassina Heitor, PhD in Territory Engineering; Full Professor with Aggregation of the Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Georesources at Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon University; researcher of the Architecture Nucleus of the research unit ICIST.

Prof. Dr. Nick Dunn, PhD in Architecture; Professor of Urban Design at ImaginationLancaster lab; Associate Director of Research of the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts at Lancaster University; former Principal Lecturer of the Manchester School of Architecture and formerly Director of Studies and Co-director of the [Re_Map] atelier at Lancaster University 

Prof. Dr. Javier Abarca, Javier Abarca, PhD in Fine Arts, researcher in the fields of graffiti and street art. Closely involved in both scenes since the 1980s, he teaches a monographic yearly class on graffiti and street art for the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, started in 2005. He writes, lectures and teaches widely, and runs the research platform Urbanario.es.

Prof. Dr. Lachlan MacDowall, PhD by the University of Melbourne; artist and cultural researcher at the Melbourne University; coordinator of Graduate Studies and Research in the Centre for Cultural Partnerships, Department of the VCA and MCM where he is also an Academic.

Dr. Luca Borriello, PhD in  in Knowledge and Promotion of Cultural and Environmental Heritage by ISUFI School of the University of Lecce; former member of the academia. Currently, he is President of Arteteca Network, Director of EXPOSITO Young Artists Observatory Naples, Director of INWARD Observatory on Urban Creativity, Director of the Creative Department of AMESCI. He is also Coordinator of valorisation and research at CUNTO (Territorial Center for Urban Creativity - Vodafone Italy Foundation), Scientific Coordinator of INOPINATUM (Center for Studies on Urban Creativity at Sapienza - University of Rome), ANCI national consultant for the enhancement of street art in Cities and Towns of Italy and Strategic adviser of The Tree of Life Foundation Onlus NGO. Furthermore, he is an active member of ICOMOS Italy.
